Dynamic Connectivity for the Construction Industry

Overview
The construction industry is crucial to the success of any civilization. Whether it’s homes, commercial buildings, or infrastructure construction moves things forward. Like any industry being on the cutting edge of technology is vitally important to construction companies.
Sedexis and Austin Industries
Sedexis is an IT consulting company that lends their expertise to many companies in the construction vertical. Sedexis works with construction companies to get them the right internet connectivity for their needs out in the field. “On a job site, internet is a utility just like water, gas and electric, you don’t have bandwidth you’re not getting very far,” said David Paul, Principal and Sedexis Consulting. One of the companies Sedexis works with is Austin Industries. Austin Industries is one of the nation’s largest, most diversified construction companies.
Austin Industries offers civil, commercial, and industrial construction services through their various operating companies. Due to this large and diversified approach, getting connectivity to their job sites quickly is an absolute must, “When we say go, we need to go soon, within 30 days maximum”, said Hunter Gregory I.T. Operations Manager for Austin Industries.
A Slow Moving Process
Having internet connectivity on the jobsite is no longer optional. For construction companies across the world utilizing the internet is crucial to their business processes, “If you ask people in the field, they can’t build a building without internet on the job site anymore”, said Gregory.
For many companies, getting a high-speed internet connection to their jobsite is a long and painful process. This was no different for Austin Industries, “Before, we’re talking 30 to 90 days if it’s coax 90 to 120 if it’s fiber just to get a connection. That was very inefficient for our business,” said Gregory. Relying on wireline connections was inefficient and unnecessarily expensive for business processes.
Even when a wireline service was finally installed, there were serious limitations for the construction vertical. Primary among these limitations was the dynamic nature of the construction industry. Due to the dynamic nature of construction, the office trailers to which internet service is delivered are frequently moved. This causes significant problems for wireline services, which have long lead times of 30 days at a minimum up to 120 days or more due to trenching and complicated buildouts. “Cable companies don’t want to survey your job site until the final placement of the trailer because if that changes then the survey is irrelevant,” said Paul. The limitations and survey issues make wireline solutions a poor fit for most construction companies telecom needs.
For their business processes to function properly Austin Industries needed a reliable carrier that could provide them with reliable high-speed services in a shorter amount of time. They also needed a service that could move with the dynamic nature of a construction jobsite. That’s when Sedexis and Austin Industries connected with One Ring Networks.
Enter One Ring Networks
Construction is a dynamic and fast-moving industry. This means that construction companies need their partners to be just as dynamic, flexible, and fast moving as they are. Enter fixed wireless and One Ring Networks. Fixed wireless is an internet delivery system that can provide high-speed internet without complicated trenching and buildouts. By using this technology One Ring can remain flexible and dynamic. This is especially useful to construction companies. “Construction is a perfect fit. Regardless of if it’s Austin or any of the construction companies we work with I really try to lean towards fixed wireless because it provides the best user experience for the It and the project managers out on the job,” said Paul, “it gets their job up and running much faster than if we were using a terrestrial connection and it’s much more reliable speed than if we were doing an LTE solution.”
One Ring’s fixed wireless service in the construction vertical is showcased in two major ways, the time to install and the flexibility to adjust to a dynamic job site. One Ring can have a fully functional high-speed internet connection to a remote job site in as little as two weeks. “It only takes about two weeks to set up, and you get symmetrical bandwidth,” said Gregory, “Instead of getting 100 mbps x 5 mbps we’re getting 100 mbps x 100 mbps which is important for how our processes work internally.” This two-week timetable is crucial to companies like Austin Industries. This is because any lag time waiting for an internet connection is costing them time and money.
In addition to being quick to install, fixed wireless is a highly flexible internet service. Frequently on Austin Industries’ job sites remote office trailers will need to be moved to different locations on site. This necessitates an internet service that can move with the trailer making wireline services unworkable. “It really is the go-to market that fixed wireless brings with the turn up time that is so valuable,” said Paul. “The locations for trailer placement can often be dynamic meaning that they think they’re going to be one place, but they must go somewhere else and with One Ring if a trailer moves a little bit, you can still get service so long you have line of site.”
One Ring is dedicated to providing the best customer experience possible. They collaborate with companies like Sedexis and Austin Industries to understand their individual needs and apply the right service. In this case Sedexis and Austin Industries needed a dynamic solution that could provide service to remote construction sites. “If it works and it always works, I’m going to keep it. I haven’t had one bad experience from a connection from One Ring,” said Paul.
