How Home and Office Internet Needs Differ

February 28, 2022
Residential consumers and business consumers use internet for different purposes. Many legacy internet providers do very little to distinguish their service offerings to suit the specific needs of their consumers. They view their job as a mere pipeline for various amounts of bandwidth instead of a provider that takes care of the specific needs of their consumers.

Residential Service

Residential internet usage is different than business usage. Residential internet is usually focused on streaming. Whether it’s streaming movies and TV on video streaming platforms, or playing online video games, a large amount of residential usage is focused in this area. On top of this, most residential consumers aren’t focused on additional telecom services like managed IT, and voice-over-IP. This is because landline phones are rapidly disappearing from modern homes. When everyone has a cell phone, landline phone systems are irrelevant for residential consumers.

With increasing numbers of companies embracing work-from-home culture, the needs of residential consumers have changed. Gone are the days where DSL, satellite and other legacy services can fit the needs of residential consumers. Modern residential consumers require high-speed internet services like fixed wireless, and fiber. This is because more people within a residence are using internet at the same time overloading low bandwidth services.

Business Service

An excellent internet connection and telecom services is crucial to the success of any business. Whether you’re a fast-food chain, a small and medium sized business or a massive corporation reliable internet is a must.

Providing internet to businesses can require special circumstances that aren’t considered with residential service. Many businesses rely on their internet providers to provide Voice-over-IP, high-speed internet to manage their office, incidental needs like elevator phone and alarm systems, and more. There are many elements that can factor into a like business’ specific use cases and internet needs. An example of this is a production studio will need to be able to upload and send long video files requiring higher bandwidth than a fast-food chain running a PoS system and limited wi-fi service for their customers. Businesses require a larger amount of flexibility on the side of the internet provider. This is because business internet use varies more than the typical residential service offerings.
