The Changing Needs of Residential Internet

January 13, 2022
Residential Internet is experiencing a transformation. The needs of consumers are changing, and internet providers need to change with them. Today’s consumer uses internet for everything in their home. Home Security? Connected. TV? Connected. Air conditioning? Connected. This trend of hyper-connectivity is only growing and requires a lot of bandwidth.

Outdated Connectivity Solutions

For many years residential consumers have been settling for subpar internet services. In many regions of the United States consumers have long dealt with DSL, and satellite as their only options. This doesn’t track with the changing needs of consumers. These technologies are rapidly becoming outdated and incapable of handling the high bandwidth needs of their consumers.

With technologies such as satellite or DSL, consumers often experience an inability to stream video, or even have more than one person connected to the internet at any given time. In addition to these clear usage issues, these services often come with data caps that limit your internet usage. Once this cap is met, providers often throttle the connection, sometimes without even notifying the customers up front about their data cap being met. These limits are often felt even worse in low income and rural communities.

Families Need High-Speed Internet

Whether it’s a couple and their dog, a family of 10, or anything in between, every household needs high-speed internet connectivity to stay up to date with today’s technical advances. The U.S. workforce has seen a massive shift to work from home. While many of them will return to the office, a percentage of the workers will never return to the office. To be able to do their jobs effectively from home, they need a reliable high-speed internet connection.

Smart home technologies are rapidly becoming commonplace in American households. Doorbells and security systems often have cameras that connect to apps on your smartphone. The A/C unit is now controlled by an app. Digital assistants like Alexa are at your fingertips, and many household appliances can connect to your smartphone via WIFI and Bluetooth. While any one of these devices don’t require a large amount of bandwidth, in the aggregate, bandwidth needs for the average American home are only going up.

Entertainment is one of the most significant aspects of internet usage in the home. If you’re buying a new TV, the odds are good that it requires an internet connection to be fully utilized. With the advent of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and countless others it’s becoming commonplace for people to cut the chord with cable and get all their entertainment through streaming. This simply can’t be done with older outdated internet solutions. In addition to video streaming, online gaming requires high-internet speeds to avoid detrimental lag ruining the gaming experience.
