Bringing Connectivity to the Set of HBO’s Mamma Dallas
With the average American watching more than five hours of television daily, and the U.S. entertainment and media market expected to reach 589 billion in 2015, it is no surprise that new television and film projects are constantly in production across the nation. And as the entertainment industry continues to expand to cities, including Dallas and Atlanta, many television and movie production companies are getting creative with the sets used for filming. Often, depending on the production’s plot, scenes are shot in outside and remote locations located far from the highly sophisticated studios located in major metro cities.
When HBO headed to Dallas, Texas in February to begin filming pilot episodes of its new series Mamma Dallas, the premium cable and satellite television network did not set up production in an elaborate 21st century studio. Instead, HBO decided to retrofit an old warehouse into a production studio and set.
Retrofitting old architecture frameworks to 21st century standards is no easy feat. For structures that simply do not meet today’s technology needs, particularly the needs of a state-of-the-art production studio, companies are custom building sets to ensure day-to-day production can run smoothly. This includes equipping the warehouse with proper Internet connectivity. As a preferred flexible wireless carrier in the Dallas-Forth Worth market, HBO turned to One Ring Networks for its unique Internet, voice and data needs.
Unlike other national carriers who take weeks or months to get connectivity up and running, One Ring Networks was able to build out the infrastructure for the set of Mamma Dallas in days. The service and installation for this particular production set included: Wi-Fi throughout, 100 mg of data, all voice channels running through a VoIP solution, headsets and more. This amount of data and connectivity allowed the entire production crew to complete the necessary tasks required to film, produce, manage and edit the series. It also allowed the crew to connect and communicate with each other while on location and with their offices back in Hollywood. While filming was taking place in Dallas, editing was taking place in Los Angeles. One Ring’s Wi-Fi, data and voice solutions enabled each day’s shots to be uploaded and sent directly to LA seamlessly for editing.
After two months of filming, Mamma Dallas successfully wrapped production earlier this month – right on schedule. Without the help of One Ring fulfilling HBO’s proper connectivity needs
to complete the complex tasks at hand, the entire schedule for the project could have been delayed or put at risk.
Retrofitting old infrastructure for modern business operations is gaining popularity. For example, the Atlanta entertainment industry is redeveloping an existing 130,000 square foot section of the former General Motor’s plant into a film and television studio! But film crews are not the only companies benefitting from this creative use of architecture. In addition to Mamma Dallas, our team recently retrofitted the city of Kemp, Texas’ water tank to provide its residents with faster Internet and more bandwidth options than the residents and local businesses have ever had before.
